The Certified Piedmontese Beef program requires strict adherence to the following specifications:
• Animals must be raised on vegetarian feed only. No animal by-products are allowed.
• Animals must never receive supplemental growth hormones or steroids.
• Animals must never receive antibiotics or any kind from birth to harvest.
• Producers must meet rigid testing standards for feed and water quality.
• Animals must be humanely raised and handled safely at all times.
• Animals must have been born and raised exclusively in the United States.
• Producers and feedlots receive periodic visits from Great Plains Beef to audit records and verify protocol requirements are being fulfilled.

Quality control of our production specifications begins at the source of origin, family-run ranches and farms located primarily in Nebraska. Qualified Piedmontese sires are bred to breeding herds, resulting in Certified Piedmontese calves that are DNA-tested and guaranteed to have the Piedrnontese-specific genetics that produce consistent tenderness and nutritional benefits. All animals enrolled in the Certified Piedmontese program are accompanied by a signed affidavit documenting compliance with program standards throughout their journey from field to fork.

The Piedmontese breed is unique in having a naturally occurring inactive myostatin gene that produces a ‘double-muscled’ beef that’s rich in protein and nutrients. That inactive gene creates beef that’s delicious in spite of the fact that it’s very lean. In Piedmontese cattle, there is an increase in the number of muscle fibers, a condition called hyperplasia, which results from the inactive myostatin gene. Other effects include a shortening of muscle fibers and a reduced amount of connective tissue and intramuscular fat. These things combine to result in a consistently lean and tender beef product.

Certified Piedmontese cattle are fed an all-natural vegetarian diet, beginning with grass on open rangeland all the way through to a high quality grain-based finishing feed. The feed supply is strictly controlled to ensure that not even the smallest amounts of animal by-products are used. Humane handling, natural and healthy feed, and the wide-open skies of the Great Plains result in Certified Piedmontese cattle that can be raised without the use of antibiotics or added hormones. If an animal does require treatment, it is documented as such and removed from the program.
